Anybody will tell you that visiting the site of one of the most bloody and pivotal battles of the American Civil War is a sobering experience.

I've added a public photo gallery to the site. I will slowly be migrating my photographic features to the User Galleries section of the site. The web site software I've been using is really bogging down with photo galleries so the external application seems to be a better idea for this type of content.

I'll also allow users to upload photographs to their own galleries and I imagine it will eventually be a good place for photo critique and sharing. Lets get the ball rollin, sign up today.

You'll have to register via e-mail to have upload access to the gallery. As usual, these things will take a while to become established. I'm sure it will eventually take on a life of its own.

Call for Submissions

In an effort to expand the focus of this site, I'm calling for submissions from my readers and friends for photographic and written articles. I've been pretty busy for the past several months but with winter upon us, now is a good opportunity to broaden our horizons.

I'm looking for well written documentaries or essays about your photographic experiences. Accompanying photographs are encouraged but not required. The main emphasis is to publish something others may find interesting to read. Amateur or Professional, the only distinctions will be the quality of the article or essay. Subject matter is open. I'll try to publish one or two of the best submissions each month in my features section. Photographs should be resized to 640 x 480 (or as close as possible) so as not to overwhelm the server and readers monitors.

If you would like to contribute, please e-mail your submissions to me as attachments along with your photographs. I'd prefer that you use text files or rtf files for your writings, to keep the formatting and page designs as simple as possible. No pornography will be accepted, but artistic nude photography will be considered.

There isn't a day gone by that a photographer isn't harassed by some overzealous "central scrutinizer" when photographing something in public. I highly recommend you visit Bert P. You'll find a lot of useful information on his site and every Photographer should know how to deal with the fact that some people think they can dictate what you can and can not do with your camera.

You'll also find additional information about photography law in the United States and for the UK & Australia.

Travel Restrictions on Lithium Batteries

New rule places limits on Lithium Batteries as Carry-on or in Baggage on Passenger Aircraft, effective January 1st, 2008

I recommend you write your local congressman or state senator and voice your opinion. Like many of you, this rule will have an effect on my ability to do my job and I believe it needs further consideration and clarification. I would certainly be unhappy if I were required to discard several hundred dollars worth of batteries before I boarded a flight simply because a TSA agent didn't know what they were doing.

New US DOT Hazmat Safety Rule to Place Lithium Battery Limits in Carry-on Baggage on Passenger Aircraft Effective January 1, 2008

Passengers will no longer be able to pack loose lithium batteries in checked luggage beginning January 1, 2008 once new federal safety rules take effect. The new regulation, designed to reduce the risk of lithium battery fires, will continue to allow lithium batteries in checked baggage if they are installed in electronic devices, or in carry-on baggage if stored in plastic bags.

Common consumer electronics such as travel cameras, cell phones, and most laptop computers are still allowed in carry-on and checked luggage. However, the rule limits individuals to bringing only two extended-life spare rechargeable lithium batteries (see attached illustration), such as laptop and professional audio/video/camera equipment lithium batteries in carry-on baggage.

"Doing something as simple as keeping a spare battery in its original retail packaging or a plastic zip-lock bag will prevent unintentional short-circuiting and fires," said Krista Edwards, Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

Lithium batteries are considered hazardous materials because they can overheat and ignite in certain conditions. Safety testing conducted by the FAA found that current aircraft cargo fire suppression system would not be capable of suppressing a fire if a shipment of non-rechargeable lithium batteries were ignited in flight.

"This rule protects the passenger," said Lynne Osmus, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) assistant administrator for security and hazardous materials. "It's one more step for safety. It's the right thing to do and the right time to do it."

In addition to the new rule, PHMSA is working with the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the battery and airline industries, airline employee organizations, testing laboratories, and the emergency response communities to increase public awareness about battery-related risks and developments.
